For Americans, Australia is on the other side of the world.  A foreign land very far away.  By and large, Australia is well worth the time.  And, its crown jewels are undoubtedly Sydney & Great Barrier Reef.  With some the world’s most beautiful beaches, world-class restaurants and unforgettable wildlife experiences, everyone should have Sydney & Great Barrier Reef on their bucket list.

Sydney & Great Barrier Reef Highlights

First, you’ll spend a couple of exploring Sydney in style followed by a discovery of the World Heritage listed Greater Blue Mountains – another luxury experience.

Then, you’ll observe the often-endangered Great Barrier Reef, which is one of the world’s most stunning natural wonders.  Amazingly, it remains the largest living thing that can be seen from space.  On the whole, it is teeming with sea life such as whales, turtles, and vibrant hues of more that 400 species of fish and coral.  We’ve partnered with a resort that sits on a private nature reserve, just to make the experience more treasured.

Finally, this customizable eco luxury package rounds out with an incredible visit to the Daintree Rainforest.  Estimated to be over 165 million years old, Daintree National Park was added to the World Heritage List in 1988 in recognition of its universal natural values.  In fact, it is home to tens of thousands of species, many of which are unique to the rainforest, and best witnessed from our partner ecolodge.

To sum up, our Ecotourism Australia certified partners will whet your appetite Sydney & Great Barrier Reef.  If you have more time, you may even consider adding extension tours to the Sunshine Coast and/or sailing through the Whitsundays.

Our partners directly engage with conservation organizations in order to maintain the ecosystems of the Blue Mountains, Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest.  Naturally, each Ecotourism Australia certified partner is highly conscious of the effect of tourism on our environment.  We combine this personal experience of nature-based activities with a professional guide.  Essentially, that allows you to gain a deeper understanding of the areas you visit.  You’ll hear the stories behind the legends and feel pampered each step of the way.

Days 1-2Sydney

Upon your arrival in Sydney, you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. The InterContinental Sydney is set in the city’s historical Treasury Building. Dating from 1851, it displays a blend of rich colonial heritage and robust contemporary architecture. Careful, painstaking restoration of the three-story building has given the hotel its elegant public rooms. Meanwhile, the tower block provides guests with spectacular views of Sydney Harbor and the Royal Botanic Gardens.

After check-in and some rest, you’ll be taken on a tour through the Harbour City, as Sydney commonly called. You’ll take a behind-the-scenes private tour of the Sydney Opera House and visit the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

On the next day, you’ll get a better perspective of aboriginal life. At this time, you’ll better understand aboriginal history, art and current contributions with special aboriginal experiences.

Day 3-5Wolgan Valley

After breakfast, you’ll be transferred via a scenic 2.5 hour drive from Sydney to a luxury resort located on Australia’s Great Dividing Range. Located between the Wollemi National Park and the Gardens of Stone National Park and within the World Heritage-listed Greater Blue Mountains, this resort occupies just one percent of its own 7,000 acre conservancy.

The Wolgan River cuts a deep gorge through the sandstone in part of the Wolgan Valley, forming a bottleneck. Steep cliffs contrast with the gentle curve of the valley floor and a picturesque road winds along the river to reach the resort on the eastern end. The valley’s settlement history can be traced through just two families, both of whom were intrinsically linked to the area; the Walkers and the Webbs. It was William Walker who received the original land grant and built the farmhouse still located on the resort property today, named the 1832 Heritage Homestead after the year it was built. In 1836, Charles Darwin visited the Homestead during his trip to Australia whilst staying as a guest of the Walker family at their nearby Wallerawang Estate. So taken was he by the sheer rock formations and scope of the land, the naturalist’s great-great-grandson, who makes his home in the region, suggests that Darwin’s revolutionary theory first took shape not in the Galápagos but in the primeval Blue Mountains.

During your stay, you’ll be treated to amenities such as a spa, exceptional dining, and hands-on conservation activities. This is the first hotel in the world to achieve internationally accredited carbon-neutral certification by CarbonZero, a distinction it continues to receive every year and the experience will stay with you for a lifetime.

Days 6-9Port Douglas

This morning, you will be transferred back to Sydney for your short flight to Cairns. Upon arrival, you will be greeted and transferred to a resort located on a private headland between Cairns and Port Douglas. Deluxe eco accommodation options are sensitively positioned amongst the resort’s 145 acre property.

Over the next few days, you’ll select experiences including nature/wildlife walks, swimming at the one mile private beach or freeform rock swimming pools set in the forest, star gazing nights, and specialist talks from local experts. For birders, this will be paradise. Birds are a constant source of entertainment with lorikeets, sun birds and honey eaters taking advantage of the high ceilings to swoop through the dining room and bar. Kookaburras will also watch quizzically from the nearby trees. Additional snorkeling excursions to the Great Barrier Reef will also be arranged.

Accredited with Advanced Eco Tourism credentials, this resort boasts grass trees that sprout along pathways with their scaly black trunks topped and tufted grassy headdresses – stunted reminders of a land long ago. Slate paving, cut from a nearby quarry, show glimpses of Gondwana in fossils over 400 million years old. Recognizing the importance of working with local communities, the resort invites the elders of the Kuku Yalanji community to take guests through the journey of their culture. From healing plants to bush food, the elders help to teach their history of survival as well as music and traditions.

Days 10-12Daintree Rainforest

After breakfast, you’ll be taken on a short transfer to the Daintree Rainforest for a stay at the Daintree Ecolodge. Situated in the heart of the World-Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest, the boutique lodge offers sustainable luxury, boasting 15 eco-friendly bayans in an awe-inspiring setting which will revitalize all your senses.

You’ll wake up to the sound of the birds in the canopy above, take in the majesty of the ancient tropical wilderness, and discover the ecolodges’ private and pristine waterfall on a leisurely walk through the enchanting rainforest. Activities include river snorkeling, fishing, horse riding, river cruises, jungle surfing, aboriginal guided walks, art workshops, and a cooking demonstrations.
