In the fifth installment of the family ecotourism series entitled Ecotourism in Northern Europe, I invite you to appreciate the promise of Stockholm. Built on 14 small islands joined by bridges, Stockholm is a wonderful mixture of busy city life and plentiful, beautiful parks. As the capital of Sweden, it enjoys a reputation for taking the best of socialist and capitalist economic systems as people are extraordinarily egalitarian yet technologically dominant and environmentally strong-minded. Sweden, together with Norway, shares the top spot for the world’s greenest country and Stockholm is a city filled with young people and young families eager to put its city on the world stage.
With its fantastic subway/metro system where young children ride for free, generous pedestrian walkways, and designated, flat biking paths, Stockholm is quite easy to maneuver. Immediately outside the city is also an archipelago of thousands of islands that are very reachable by boat or ferry many of which offer sightseeing tours.
Family ecotourism activities:
- The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation arranges guided walking tours of Stockholm every weekend year-round. The guides are quite engaging as they provide understanding of the nature found right in the city. They also provide tips on other areas you can visit on your own.
- All major towns in Sweden have cycle paths and designated cycle lanes that are also good for rollerblading. Bike rental shops can be found at Stockholm’s Central Stations and the tourist offices have information about city cycling tours as well as multi-city vacation packages. Within Stockholm, one of the best places to ride is the island of Djurgarden. With its museums, greenhouses, gardens, forests, and amusement parks, there is enough nature and heritage for every member of the family to enjoy.
- Immediately outside the city and quite reachable by subway/metro or short bus ride are the beautiful Bergianska Botanical Gardens, the Fjarilshuset Butterfly and Bird House and Haga Park. With emphasis on relaxation and getting back to nature, they are all great places for rejuvenation.
