On September 1, the International Ecotourism Society (TIES) announced the two winners of the 2010 Innovation Award for leadership in sustainable tourism and community conservation. Each year, TIES recognizes individuals and organizations who have demonstrated leadership in spearheading a specific project.
This year, the individual winner is Ron Mader who is the Director of Planeta.com, which is a website that provides eco-friendly, people-friendly and place-friendly travel resources.
The organization winner is Rainforest Alliance, which is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of tropical forests. Ron Mader was awarded as a result of his work for an indigenous tourism and biodiversity website project.
Rainforest Alliance’s award is for launching the Verified program, which assists tourism entrepreneurs and community-based businesses in Latin America in becoming more environmentally and socially responsible.
