Staying Healthy During Holiday Travels

It’s that time of year when the endless stream of security lines, travel stresses, colds and viruses, and Holiday joys are more than you can stand.  Here are some tips for staying healthy and maybe even maintaining that mind-body-soul connection throughout the high travel season.

  1. Get some melatonin – the cramped coach cabin of any airline can make it quite uncomfortable to get some necessary shut-eye before or after a trip. Melatonin, which is available over-the-counter, can help you ease into the flight nap as well as prepare you for the time-change transition.  You can also ask your pediatrician if the kids can take some too.
  2. Pack a mini medical kit – pack a little prevention by assembling a mini-medical kit with Emergen-C vitamins, aspirin / fever/ pain relievers, anti-diarrheal medication, antacids, motion sickness pills, and some simple first aid supplies.
  3. Download the IPhone app for healing - with the cold and flu season knocking on our doors, check out Dr. Jacob Teitelbuam’s free Natural Cures IPhone app which offers access to holistic health information on over 100 conditions.
  4. Stay hydrated - generally, it is recommended to drink eight to ten, 8 – ounce glasses of water each day to release toxins in the body so it operates at maximum efficiency.  If possible, try not to drink the water straight from tap, as even if it’s very safe drinking water, it may contain common pathogens that your body may not be used to - such as my travel experience through Australia fourteen years ago that took me down for a few days!
  5. Get your rest – while it is easy to fall out of a sleep routine, try to take some extra naps during the vacation to keep up your immune system.
  6. Exercise – taking a brisk 20 minute walk around a local park, zoo, or pedestrian shopping area is quite sufficient for keeping up one’s immunity.
  7. Wash your hands often - nothing upsets me more than having a trickle of cold water running from a sink with no soap available when I really need to wash my hands.  The easy fix is to carry several small bottles of sanitizer sprays or gels.
  8. Eat healthy meals – while it may be tempting to over-indulge on the decedent foods and desserts of the season, try to eat regular portions while mixing in lots of fruits and vegetables.
  9. Update traveler’s insurance - make an informed decision on what level of coverage you require based on where you’re travelling, what activities you’re undertaking and how much you care about your possessions or the chances that your plans may need to change and you could be left paying additional out of pocket expenses.
