World Summit on Sustainable TourismI have been a proud member of Sustainable Tourism Charter's ST+20 Scientific Committee for more than two years during which I have tried to advance the organization's goals for preserving common heritage, supporting tourism biodiversity, decreasing tourism's effect on climate change, wealth redistribution, and enhancing partnerships and innovation - the last of which specifically related to the development of a Return on Investment (ROI) Model for Sustainable Tourism.

If you are interested in becoming more involved in this growing and important field of tourism, later this year, from November 26-27, a seminal event will take place in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain) to mark the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Charter for Sustainable Tourism.

The World Summit on Sustainable Tourism (ST+20) is organized by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI), the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and the Basque Tourism Agency (Basquetour), with the support of UNWTO and UNESCO and the main international organizations involved in sustainable tourism.

In 1995, the World Charter for Sustainable Tourism was adopted at the first World Conference on Sustainable Tourism, which was held on the island of Lanzarote (Spain). This historic action took place under the auspices of UNESCO, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the leading associated international organizations and programs such as the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the European Commission, the UNESCO MAB (Man and the Biosphere) Program, the World Heritage Center and the UN Division for Sustainable Development.

Twenty years later, the ST+20 Summit is planning to bring back together the main actors of sustainable tourism in order to debate on their future, to give a new meaning to the Charter for Sustainable Tourism and to create new alliances.

ST+20 gives you the opportunity to highlight and share the best practices and success stories on the field of sustainable tourism, as well as presenting posters and exhibition stands during the Summit.

This sustainable tourism event promises to be a most important Summit of the decade.
