Why Authentic Ecotourism?

Read trip reviews for San Jose and Pacuare River Rafting to better understand the ecotourism experience.

Day 1 Arrival into Costa Rica

Arrival into Costa Rica: Your first days in Costa Rica will be in San Jose at the Grano de Oro hotel, a 40 room boutique hotel with a designation of Level 4 Certificate in Sustainable Tourism. The hotel exudes the charm and character of a stately mansion with the comforts and amenities of a fine hotel. It has a secluded terrace garden with large Jacuzzis and courtyards filled with fountains and tropical flowers.  Explore the city on your own or arrange for a private tour.

Day 2 (B,L) Pacuare River Rafting or option to Visit Poas Volcano, Coffee Plantation and La Paz Waterfall Gardens

Today you can choose whether to take an adventurous adrenaline-release tour on the Class III-IV waters of the Pacuare River, or enjoy a full day visit to the exuberant cloud forest and active volcano.

Pacuare River rafting tour: After an early morning pickup from your hotel, you will be driven by private, comfortable bus to the Operations Center for a delicious, typical Costa Rican breakfast. Once at the river at our private put-in, you'll raft 16 miles deep in the heart of densely vegetated gorges, past gushing waterfalls, serene pools and pounding rapids, in one of Costa Rica's most impressive primary rainforests. The Pacuare River is one of the top five rafting rivers in the world for its scenery and rapids.

Poas Volcano, Coffee tour and La Paz Waterfall gardens: Early departure from the hotel, to the foothills of the Poas Volcano. Your first stop will be Doka Estate, where one of the best coffees in our country is produced. You will receive an introduction in the plantation; then, a visit to a wet coffee mill that is 70 years old and still works! Afterwards, the drying patios, and finally, the roaster and packing plant will give you a picture of the universe of our golden bean. From here, you will head to the Poas Volcano, featuring one of the largest crater in the world, 1.5 km (0.95 miles) wide and you will walk to the very edge of it! After spending some time at the crater, you will hike back to the transportation to head for La Paz Waterfall Gardens. At La Paz, you will enjoy the frog and snake exhibition, the butterfly garden and the hummingbird gallery and the two waterfalls of La Paz river. At the end of the tour, you will have time for some shopping.

Day 3-4 (B) Arenal Volcano & Hotsprings

Grab your bags and drive off to the Arenal Springs Hotel, located within view of the famous Arenal Volcano, and a mere 200 meters from the hot springs. The hotel features 87 colonial style rooms, each room has its own terrace with rocking chairs, large sliding bay windows, king or queen size beds, a/c, cable TV, ceiling fan, and amenities. Hotel services include large tropical gardens, swimming pool, conference room, vegetable garden, restaurant, bar and complete spa services including massages, facials, and more. Relax!

Here you can elect to visit the Arenal Hanging Bridges (not included), 15 miniature Golden Gates through the jungle, or arrange for other adventures. Visit to the Arenal Volcano National park where you will walk either in the trail Los Tucanes or Mirador El Silencio, depending upon which side of the volcano the lava is flowing. It is possible to observe a great variety of plants, wildlife, magnificent lava rock formations and the Arenal Lake. During the tour, experienced guides will provide interesting and educational information regarding the history of the majestic mountain and the Arenal Volcano National Park. At the hot springs you can enjoy a healthy and relaxing bath.

Day 5-6 (B) Manuel Antonio National Park

Time to hit the beach! Costa Rica is known for its pristine beaches and wonderful weather, and on this 2-day leg you will be spending your time on one of Costa Rica's most beautiful beaches, Manuel Antonio.

Your stay will be at the Arenas del Mar Nature & Beach Resort, a deluxe beachfront hotel located approximately 15 minutes drive from the main entrance to the Manuel Antonio National Park. The Resort has 38 rooms, including ocean view apartments with two bedrooms and three full bathrooms. All rooms offer spectacular views of the Manuel Antonio National Park, the Pacific Ocean and the tropical rainforest. The hotel was built with an ambitious combination of deluxe accommodation, coupled with the highest level of certified sustainability. The buildings housing the guest rooms were altered to fit around existing trees, water is heated with solar panels and grey water is reused for irrigation.

During your stay at Arenas del Mar you'll take two fantastic adventure tours. The first one is a spectacular Canopy tour, where you soar through the treetops of the tropical rainforest canopy, and over the trails far below. It's completely safe, and expert guides assist and educate you on the various layers of virgin rain forests. You've never seen nature from this perspective! This is a tour that you will never forget. Next, strap on your walking shoes and tour Manuel Antonio National Park. Once again, an expert guide will take you on an unforgettable journey through one of the country's most beautiful national parks. You and your guide will discover nature together, seeking out a vast variety of flora and fauna found nowhere else in the world.
